Here is the pure skinny on what works. When I entered Second Life, it was a strange wasteland of few people. Most of those few people were rude and sniggery.
Some very rare folks thought caging a new person and demanding virtual frolic to be freed was tons of fun.
However, I barely remember all that. What I remember is finding people who liked to chat and were fun and seemed to share pearls of wisdom with no possible return on their time. I remember the fella who explained prim hair to me.
I remember the kindness.

When I first logged into SL in mid-2008, I took the Orientation Course, but what really locked me in were the friendly residents that took time to show me how to do fun stuff.
Dear Linden Labs:
Listen to your heart and use your head. Retention requires putting a friendly face in front of new folks.
